What is E-liquid?

E-liquid, also known as vape liquid or vape juice, is the substance that is vaporised in e-cigarettes. It delivers a hit of nicotine and delicious flavour that satisfies cravings. E-liquids come in a variety of various formats depending on their recipe, with properties that vary to suit different vaping styles.

What is PG and VG?

PG and VG, recognized as food-safe liquids, constitute the main vape ingredients.

PG represents ‘propylene glycol,’ and VG represents ‘vegetable glycerine.’

Most vape juices feature a combination of these ingredients, but ‘max VG’ labelled e-liquids contain minimal amounts of propylene glycol.

What is PG in vape juice?

Propylene Glycol (PG) is a colourless liquid with a tad sweet taste. It’s commonly used in the food industry as a preservative. You can find it in the medical industry too. In the vape industry, PG is primarily used as a base ingredient in vape juices. Important: PG has a lower viscosity than VG.

What is VG in vape juices?

Vegetable Glycerine is also a colourless liquid used mainly as a sweetener and thicker in the food industry. Manufacturers in the vape industry use it as a base for e-liquids, as well as a sweetener. It has a thicker consistency than PG and helps to produce a more dense vapour.

VG/PG Ratio meaning: what is the best PG/VG Ratio for flavor?

E-liquids are produced with different levels of PG & VG. Differing ratios translate into smoother throat hit (or stronger), flavour, cloud size or density.

E-liquid formulations can easily be tailored to customer preferences. Compare in the graphic below how the properties of a given e-liquid will change depending on the PG and VG content.

What VG/PG Ratio should I use? The most common options for your e-liquid calculator

There’s no ideal PG or ideal VG level. The ratio depends on personal preferences – yours and your customers.

The PG/VG mixes are displayed in percentages, frequently as “70/30 VG/PG” or “30 PG/70 VG”. Check the most popular PG/VG ratios and find out more about what effect the various combinations have.

Propylene Glycol

100% PG

Products based fully on propylene glycol hit vaper’s throat in a similar way cigarettes do. PG provides great flavour distribution and mixing. PG nicotine bases are ideal for taste enthusiasts and those trying to quit smoking.

Vegetable Glycerine

100% VG

As opposed to PG-based products, vegetable glycerine nicotine bases bring a much lighter “throat hit”. VG is also responsible for cloudiness, therefore is the best ratio for vapers, called cloud chasers (they prioritize thick and white clouds ought to reach for them).

70PG/30VG

Nicotine bases with such ratio will leave vapers with a more noticeable throat hit and simultaneously very good flavor dissolution but also allow them to still enjoy those loved-by-all thick clouds.

50PG/50VG

Perfection when it comes to balancing between „throat hit”, taste and clouds. Nicotine base 50 propylene glycol / 50 vegetable glycerine may also work excellently for those who waver what to choose.

30PG/70VG

Perfect solution for those who seek very cloudy vapors but do not want to give up good-tasting e-liquids. In this case, the PG/VG ratio of 30/70 puts it halfway between 50/50 and 100% VG nicotine bases

e-liquid bases

Although every e-liquid can be vaped with e-cigarettes and MODs, there might be a difference in experience regarding the device one uses.

As mentioned above, propylene glycol is responsible for flavour distribution and glycerine for cloudiness, due to its’ higher viscosity. Therefore, to get the best experience, one should have a device appropriate to the ratio.

There are MODs and PODs. The first type devices are bigger with RTA/RDTA/RDA atomizers. The second type are smaller devices with evaporators matched as a cartridge with replacable coil.

The Ideal PG/VG Ratio For PODs

It is recommended to use thinner e-liquids for PODs. They have smaller coil, e-liquid carrier (cotton) and holes through which the carrier is soaked. Using thicker liquid can lead to drying the carrier and overheating the coil. In this type of devices the taste is delivered worsely, so the more PG, which is responsible for the taste delivery, the better the experience.

In these devices there are bigger evaporators, coils, and as a consequence, there is a bigger air flow. Therefore, vapers use MODs when they focus on thick clouds which are brought by glycerine in e-liquids. Due to more coils and bigger clouds, the taste is clearer, which means there is no such a big demand for PG content. Moreover, because of MODs’ size, they have more fluid carrier and bigger air holes. Hence, e-liquid carrier will get soaked faster and dry slower.

PG&VG: Ratio matters, but so does the QUALITY!

When buying semi-finished compounds for e-liquids, you should always pay attention to the quality of the raw materials. Probably the worst thing any e-liquid manufacturer can do is to waste great quality pure nicotine and mix it with subpar, low quality, cheap VG or PG.
PG and VG we offer in Chemnovatic are only of pharmaceutical-grade (USP/EP) with the highest purity available on the market. Check all our raw materials for e-liquid industry.

PG/VG Ratio: Summary

The PG/VG ratio is a crucial element in the world of e-liquid production, influencing not only the vaping experience but also the overall quality of the product. Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) serve as the primary base components in e-liquids, each contributing unique characteristics to the final blend.
