Nicotine shots – dealing with TPD regulations

22 December 2016|

Nicotine shots together with other vaping products are subject to TPD (Tobacco Products Directive). Each manufacturer of nicotine shots and e-liquids is obliged to corry out the laboratory tests of own products and to notify its products in every Member States authorities they are intended to be sold. Vaping products (including nicotine shots) also need to be packed in TPD-compliant packaging. Moreover, the TPD Directive does not allow the promotion of e-cigarette products in mass media such as television, radio or the press. If you would like to know more about the TPD requirements when it comes to nicotine shots, read the article below.

What is TPD?

The TPD Directive is an EU tobacco regulation that came into effect in all Member States on May 20, 2016. The purpose of the directive is to standardize and unify the legislation all e-cigarette and vaping products all across the European Union. TPD aims to establish a regulatory environment for e-cigs and e-liquids to make sure they meet safety and marketing standards and to eliminate illicit trading. Therefore to provide vapers with the greatest possible level of safety and transparency of vaping products. The TPD directive has introduced a set of rules for vaping products, which among others are:

  • Product-specific requirements (eg. capacity not greater than 10ml, max nicotine concentration 20mg/ml)
  • Obligation to TPD notify products in the Member States
  • Standards for packaging and labeling (warning signs and pictograms)
  • Ban on online sales and mass media advertising to end-users

TPD and Nicotine Shots

Nicotine shots are nothing more than nicotine bases used in the production of e-liquids, but in a capacity not exceeding 10 ml. They are used by adding one or two shots with a high concentration of nicotine to the premix. This solution was created for the needs of vapers who want to enjoy the taste of their favorite e-liquid longer. Since the introduction of the TPD directive in Europe, it has become forbidden to sell e-liquids with a capacity greater than 10ml.

Nicotine shots as products containing pure nicotine also need to comply with the TPD regulations. Just like vape-ready e-liquids, they follow the same procedures and obligations. For example:

  • TPD registration obligation
  • The maximum content of nicotine not exceeding 20mg/ml
  • Volume up to 10ml

TPD compliant NicShots

tpd ready nicotine basesBefore the introduction of the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) many nicotine base manufacturers were looking for a solution to oncoming nicotine products regulations. Two main concerns were:

1. Online sales ban in many countries for all products containing nicotine.

2. The limit put on nicotine strength (no more than 20mg/ml) and volume of nicotine liquids (not more than 10ml).

Manufacturers are still trying to cope with TPD regulations in many ways. Nicotine boosters or nicotine shots being one of them. Moreover, Chemnovatic has implemented that idea into a reality. TPD ready DIY nicotine base

Nicbase DIY packaging is 100% TPD compliant.

Tobacco Products Directive introduced by the EU puts multiple restrictions on manufacturing, packaging and sale of e-liquids and nicotine bases. As we all know, according to current regulations the sale of nicotine bases and e-liquids with nicotine strengths above 20mg/ml to the consumer is strictly forbidden, as is the sale of any liquids containing nicotine in packaging larger than 10ml. These two conditions basically put an end to DIY e-liquid manufacture – no more diluting of high content nicotine bases, no more mixing your own e-liquids at home, no more favorite flavor combinations etc. In theory…. DIY e-liquid making. Where to start?

14 June 2016|

diy nicotine basesSince the early days of vaping there have always been people who preferred tinkering with their e-cigarettes, coils, tanks rather than using ready-made solutions. Not surprisingly it is the same in case of e-liquids: diluting, mixing flavors etc. It has slowly progressed to a point where people are making DIY e-liquids in their bedrooms and living rooms. These days you will find user created ratio calculators, nicotine strength calculators, e-liquid recipe calculators and other tools helping you make whatever e-liquid you may desire. If you are a connoisseur of flavor or want to save some cash on your e-liquids you probably already thought of making your own juices. Soon, with the recent TPD regulations it may turn out to be much easier and cheaper to mix your own e-liquids rather than buy ready-made liquids from the stores since internet sales will be banned. Nothing really complicated or dangerous if you follow a set of rules, be careful and precise.

What will I need to start making my own e-liquids?
