Monoethylene glycol (MEG, Ethylene Glycol, Ethanediol) is an organic chemical compound from the group of polyhydric alcohols, widely used as a base raw material and component in many industries. It is a colorless, syrupy liquid with a mild odor and sweet aftertaste, highly soluble in water and alcohols.
Due to its physicochemical properties – including high boiling point, good solubility and low freezing point – MEG is used in refrigeration and antifreeze formulations, in the production of polymers (e.g. PET), cleaning agents, coatings, polyurethane foams and as a reagent in organic synthesis. The substance is classified as toxic according to the CLP/GHS regulation.

Ethylene glycol molecules have been observed in space. Scientists believe it may have been created by chemical reactions between other organic compounds in space dust.
