Pharmaceutical Propylene Glycol (USP)

Propylene Glycol (PG) is a synthetic substance, which works as an excellent solvent and base for the distribution and mixing of other chemical compounds. It has a form of an oily liquid, with a sweetish aftertaste and high viscosity. PG may be found in everyday products, such as instant soups, soft drinks, medications, anti-freeze agents, or e-liquids.

  • Product of pharmaceutical grade (USP/EP)
  • Wide range of applications in various industries, such as foods, cosmetics, medicine, e-liquid, and more
  • Approved for contact with food

Propylene Glycol Application

Vape industry

Pharmaceutical propylene glycol is perfect for mixing with pure nicotine, vegetable glycerine, and nicotine salts during the e-liquid production process. It is responsible for the “throat hit” and flavour distribution.

If you wonder what would be the best ratio for an e-liquid, this article may help you. In case you wonder what differentiates PG from VG, read more about it here.

Cosmetics

Propylene glycol is widely used in cosmetics, especially in skin care products. It creates a film on the skin, hence maintaining humidity by decreasing the water loss Additionally, the use of PG products helps to lower the number of appearing acne spots.

Moreover, propylene glycol helps to acquire an emulsive consistency of products such as toothpaste, creams, or stick deodorants, and due to its binding features PG boosts the delivery of other ingredients. Additionally, in toothpastes, PG’s sweet taste also comes in handy.

the Food industry - a production machine

Food industry

PG may enter the human body by breathing, e.g. when there is a vaping mist, however, the most common way to get it to the bloodstream is eating, as glycol is present in various food products. In the food industry, it works as a preservative, emulsifier, and component of flavors and colors (E1520). Its preservative features protect food from deterioration and its emulsifying properties give smoothness to food products.

Propylene glycol may be found in pasta foods, flavours, baked, dairy foods, and more. It is also an essential compound when it comes to fodder production: canned pets, animal feed, or vitamin and aquatic feed.

Medicine and pharmacy

Propylene glycol is commonly used in medical products, especially skincare and oral medications. It works as an emollient and prevents dry skin from losing water or dilutes and stabilizes medicines in their target forms.

PG is present in various medications as a solubilizer. It means it is a surfactant, that allows water-insoluble or sparingly soluble substances, for example, injectable medicines. Additionally, it stabilizes vitamines and works as water-miscible cosolvent.

Chemical industry

PG is also applied in various chemical products. It has a -60°C freezing point, that’s why when mixed with water, it lowers the water’s freezing point. Hence, PG is a part of hydraulic press working fluid, coolants, or antifreeze and de-icing agents. Due to its low toxicity, propylene glycol is increasingly replacing ethylene glycol traditionally used in these fluids.

Other Glycols

Propylene glycol is just one of a few glycols, a group that gathers alcohols called diols, substances that have two hydroxyl (-OH) groups. Glycols differ from each other in the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms. In our offer, among others, you will find various glycols: monoethylene (MEG), diethynele (DEG), triethylene (TEG), polyethylene (PEG), monopropylene (MPG), dipropylene (DPG), or polypropylene (PPG).

If you want to buy propylene glycol or any other kind, contact us at sales@chemnovatic.com. We are sure, we can help you!

Keep in mind that in our offer you will also find vegetable glycerine, and if you want to learn the differences between glycol and glycerine, you can do it by reading one of our articles.
